A HUSBAND, a house and a successful career is what most women want. Or is it?
Thirty-something Elizabeth Gilbert had it all, yet she took off around the world on a journey to discover what she really wanted in life.
Her travels took her to Italy, where she delighted in the pleasure of food, and India, where she learnt the power of prayer through yoga and meditation. And, finally, while visiting Indonesia, she unexpectedly found true love.
Her bestselling story Eat, Pray, Love will be released as a movie starring Julia Roberts this year. Read on to find out what women love about one of the destinations on the movie which is Bali.
BALI
Art of balancing the two
BALI is not just a fly-and-flop destination with cheap beach massages, spicy food and shopping bargains. There is tranquillity in Bali’s hills and rice terraces, serenity in its temples and mountains.
Many visitors to Bali are touched by its mysticism. “There is a kind of magic about Bali that took me some time to discover,” Australian businesswoman Susan Schodde says. Her decision to leave her secure Beijing-based corporate role with Mercedes-Benz for a management job in Bali changed her life in an unexpected way. Eighteen months ago, Schodde resigned and has found contentment in running a villa rental business fixing up and renting out luxury holiday villas in Bali. Her second property, Villa Bedua, will be available in April.
Another woman who found inspiration in Bali, in a different way, is spiritual tour company owner Halle Eavelyn. While reading Eat, Pray, Love during a Bali trip, Eavelyn came up with the idea of a tour that takes fans to meet the people and see the places in Gilbert’s book.
The itinerary will include yoga and meditation, learning to pray in temples the Balinese Hindu way, palm readings by Ketut Liyer, the medicine man in Gilbert’s book, a vitamin lunch at Wayan’s tiny restaurant, meetings with Mario from the Ubud Inn, and Yudi, Gilbert’s Balinese friend who went on the “American” road trip with her around Bali.
“We’re a spiritual travel company and our tour is designed to help seekers to awaken in Bali,” Eavelyn says.
